A few days after Bruce Springsteen made headlines for appearing in his first ever Superbowl commercial, news that the Born to Run singer was arrested for a DUI while visiting his home state of New Jersey surfaced. Now, the singer is in the news again, only this time it’s because he pleaded guilty to one of the charges against him.
On November 14, 2020, the rock icon was arrested at Gateway National Recreation Area for DWI, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. According to the recreational area’s website, alcohol is not allowed on the premises, which has had parts of it closed off due to Coronavirus restrictions.
According to the police report, the singer’s body swayed when his eyes were checked and he took 45 steps during the walking test instead of the 18 he was instructed to take by law enforcement. He reportedly refused to provide a breath test sample, however later acquiesced and blew a 0.2, which is under the legal 0.08 limit.
Details later emerged that the police officer at the scene saw the musician take a shot of tequila before getting on his motorcycle and starting the engine. Reportedly, there was an empty 750-milliliter bottle of Patron sitting near the singer, however, it was not revealed how full the bottle was when Springsteen started drinking from it.
The singer appeared in court on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 where he pleaded guilty to drinking alcohol in a restricted area. After appearing in court via video conference, the judge assigned to the case dismissed the charges of reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Springsteen agreed to pay a $500 fine for consuming alcohol in a restricted area.
